Inclusive pedagogy and Diverse Learners

The Teaching Slavery in Scotland Project understands that the transatlantic slave trade is an emotive and sensitive topic which will resonate differently with different learners. A core dimension of the project has been the attention paid to how this topic might be taught in a sensitive way. We would like to acknowledge the contribution of public historian and anti racist educator, Lisa Williams, who has, since 2018, taught Scotland’s links to slavery as an invited speaker in schools, and through walking tours of Edinburgh. We also acknowledge the support or Intercultural Youth Scotland, especially the contribution of Grace Dempsey who appears in the videos below.

Should the ethnic diversity of your learners affect how you teach this topic?

How should teachers take the needs of their learners into account?
