Resistance in the Caribbean and Abolition Videos

1807 and 1834

In this clip Prof. Diana Paton and Dr Peggy Brunache discuss the commonplace confusion between 1807 when the involvement of British ships in slave trade ended, and 1834 when slavery began to phase out in the British Empire.

Resistance by enslaved people

This clip explores the different kinds of resistance to slavery seen in the British Caribbean. The clip emphasises the different kinds of resistance from organised armed resistance in the Christmas Revolt to everyday acts of resistance which, while not threatening the institution of slavery, worked to assert the dignity and agency of enslaved people.
